Redwood Materials said Thursday that it’s working with Ultium Cells LLC, the joint battery cell manufacturing venture between General Motors Co. and LG Energy Solution, to recycle scrap from facilities in Warren, Ohio and Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Redwood, in a statement, said it will manage all scrap from the Ohio and Tennessee operations. The company estimates it will deal with 10,000 tons of scrap material annually. About 5% to 10% of material at an average battery factory becomes scrap, the company said.

The scrap being recycled by Redwood will be processed into battery materials and supplied back to makers of battery cells.

Redwood’s CEO is JB Straubel, a co-founder of electric car maker Tesla Inc.

The company says its recycling processes use less energy and water while generating less CO2 emissions.
