This month, our member spotlight is pleased to have interviewed Brian Bachand, CEO of Westover Auto Salvage in Belchertown, MA, a second-generation auto recycler who’s transforming his family business through innovation, education, and industry advocacy.
From sweeping floors as a child and stacking tires, to a forward-thinking leader planning for the next generation and armed with his father’s powerful credo—”we move forward and make it happen”—guiding his approach, Brian shared wisdom that applies to businesses of all sizes: ask questions, seek knowledge, and maintain a healthy work-life balance by being “where your feet are.”
Diving deep into the rapidly evolving automotive recycling landscape, Brian talked about the unique challenges EVs present as more and more of the population shifts towards electric vehicles—from specialized handling requirements to critical fire safety protocols. Brian also explained how market volatility in commodities and regulatory changes are reshaping business strategies across the industry.
“We don’t run a museum, we sell auto parts,” Brian explained, emphasizing the need to move beyond the outdated “junkyard” stereotype toward recognition as professional recyclers providing quality parts and exceptional service. He provided us with some powerful insights regarding building strategic partnerships, leveraging technology solutions like VinMatchPro, and actively participating in industry organizations as a masterclass in modern recycling operations.
On top of all the above, Brian was also excited to announce his upcoming novel “Dismantled Hearts: A Used Auto Parts Mystery”—a unique project combining his industry expertise with creative storytelling. A seasoned recycler or the curious mind will find a lot of valuable perspective on building relationships, embracing change, and moving an essential industry forward.
Join us at the upcoming URG Conference April 10-12 in Orlando to connect with industry leaders like Brian and discover the latest innovations transforming automotive recycling.
